The 7 checks before you pay
- 1. The exact engine codeIt is cast or stamped on the block. Match it to your vehicle, not just the size. A 2AZ and a 2AR are both 2.4 litres, but they do not swap.
- 2. Origin and historyAsk where the engine comes from and what kind of vehicle it ran in. An honest seller answers clearly. ENGICOR's engines come from vehicles that ran in China.
- 3. No cracks, no damageLook for cracks in the block and the head, broken mounts, and signs of welding or fire. Look for missing sensors and cut wiring too.
- 4. A smooth hand turnPut a bar on the crankshaft bolt and turn the engine two full revolutions. It should feel smooth, with no hard spots, no grinding and no knock. A seized engine is scrap.
- 5. The oil tells the storyPull the dipstick and open the oil cap. Milky oil can mean coolant got inside, often a head gasket. Metal flakes mean internal wear. Thick black sludge means poor maintenance.
- 6. What is fittedUsed engines are supplied as removed from the vehicle, so the alternator, starter, pumps and wiring vary from unit to unit. Count them in the photos before you agree on a price.
- 7. A transparent sellerAsk for photos of every side of your actual unit, not a catalogue picture. Ask if you can visit before the final payment, and get the payment terms in writing.
Bonus: before you install
Before installing, have your mechanic run a compression test, and replace the oil, filters, belts, seals and gaskets. A small cost now protects the whole job.
