Reading for this lane: Toyota 1ZZ-FE vs 2ZR-FE: which 1.8 does your Corolla need?  ·  How to identify the exact engine model before you order  ·  How much does a container of used engines cost?

Why the 1ZZ still sells, fifteen years after the 2ZR replaced it

The 1ZZ-FE powered the Corolla generation that East Africa, Nigeria and Pakistan imported by the hundred thousand — the 2000–2008 Corolla and Corolla Altis, and the Allion, Premio and Wish that fill the used-import lots in Mombasa and Dar es Salaam. Toyota replaced it with the 2ZR-FE from 2007, but those cars are still on the road, and every year more of them need an engine.

That is replacement demand, not fashion: a buyer who fits 1ZZ engines is serving a fleet that is too big to disappear. The 1ZZ and the 2ZR are not interchangeable — different engines, different mounts and wiring — so the right unit is the one your customers' cars were built with.

1AZ-FE: the 2.0 of the RAV4 and the Asian Camry

The 1AZ-FE is the 2.0-litre member of the AZ family, the smaller sibling of the 2AZ-FE we list for the Camry. It powers the RAV4 2.0 of 2000–2006, the Camry 2.0 sold in South-East Asia and Taiwan, the Ipsum and the Asian Wish 2.0 — cars that reached East Africa and the Gulf in large numbers through the used-import trade.

Order by the exact code. The 1AZ-FSE — the direct-injection D-4 version fitted to the Noah, Voxy, Avensis, Isis and many Japanese-market Wish, Allion and Premio 2.0 models — is a different engine and is not a drop-in replacement for a 1AZ-FE; it is supplied on request. The same applies to the 2AZ-FE (2.4 L), which has its own published price.

What you receive, and the limits of the check

Grade A only, like everything we export: engines supplied as removed from the vehicle (what is fitted varies by unit and shows in each engine's photos). Each engine is cleaned, handled and looked over, and its crankshaft is turned by hand with a tool to confirm that the mechanism rotates. It is then photographed from every side, and the photos go into your order file as "Engine 1", "Engine 2", "Engine 3" and so on.

What the check covers: a manual crankshaft rotation check and an individual photo record. It is not a compression, leak-down, bench or running test, so on its own it does not prove how an engine will run once installed.

The early 1ZZ-FE is known for oil consumption (undersized piston rings and oil-drain holes were the cause Toyota later revised), and no hand check can measure that. Many buyers of this family have their installer run a compression check before fitting.

Frequently asked

Is the 1ZZ-FE the same as the 2ZR-FE?

No. Both are 1.8-litre Toyota engines, but the 2ZR-FE (from 2007) is a different design and they are not interchangeable. Both carry published prices: 1ZZ-FE US$ 670 and 2ZR-FE US$ 410 per unit, in a full container.

Can I mix 1ZZ and 1AZ with other models in one container?

Yes. A common East African load puts 1NZ-FE and 2NZ-FE as the volume base with 1ZZ-FE and 1AZ-FE on top. Engines-only loads are 90 in a 20-ft or 130 in a 40-ft, whatever the mix; mixed loads are 45 engines + 45 gearboxes or 65 + 65.

Do you supply the 1AZ-FSE (D-4) as well?

On request. The 1AZ-FSE is outside our nineteen published models and is not interchangeable with the 1AZ-FE, so it is handled as a commercial enquiry — send the vehicle and year and sales confirms availability and price in the quotation.

Can I add the gearbox?

Yes, in the mixed configurations only (45 + 45 or 65 + 65), at US$ 190 per gearbox for either engine. Both are two-wheel drive only — they do not fit 4WD versions. Used gearboxes are sold untested and as-is (in their current condition).
