Toyota 1KD vs 2KD: the difference, and which diesel is better for your market

Short answer: for most used-engine counters the 2KD-FTV is the better buy — the 2.5-litre D-4D (about 102–144 hp) fitted to the volume Hilux, Hiace and Innova, with far more units to sell and cheaper injectors to put right. The 1KD-FTV (3.0 litres, about 163–171 hp) is the stronger engine, but it is scarcer, dearer and carries an injector-seal history, so it pays only if the Prado and top-trim Hilux trade is your customer.

Wholesale onlyRegular orders are one full container — 90 engines in a 20-ft or 130 in a 40-ft, or with gearboxes 45 + 45 / 65 + 65. New customers can make their first purchase from 10 engines (10, 20, 30 or 40), with gearboxes and consolidated shipping, at list price, with no first-order surcharge (LCL freight quoted separately): first-order offer. A second order can start from 45 engines, also at list price. We do not sell single units.

1KD vs 2KD: the difference at a glance

The main difference between the 1KD and the 2KD is displacement: the 1KD-FTV is a 3.0-litre engine and the 2KD-FTV a 2.5-litre one, from the same Toyota KD family of D-4D common-rail turbo diesels. That gives the 1KD more power and torque; the 2KD is fitted to far more vehicles.

Two engines, one family

The 2KD-FTV is the 2.5-litre common-rail turbo diesel fitted to Hilux, Hiace, Innova and Fortuner in their volume trims. The 1KD-FTV is its 3.0-litre brother, fitted higher up the same ranges — Hilux top trims, Fortuner and the Prado. Same architecture and era, different displacement, different output, and in the used trade, decidedly different economics.

The 2KD is the volume engine: more of them exist, more of them come up for replacement, and their buyers are counters and fleet workshops keeping working pickups alive. The 1KD is scarcer, more powerful, and worth more per unit — with a repair history that demands more careful buying.

Which markets ask for which

East African demand tilts hard toward the 2KD, because the 2.5 Hilux and the Hiace are the working fleet of the region. Tanzania and Uganda buy it steadily; Kenya adds it to Probox-dominated loads. The 1KD follows Prado and high-trim Hilux populations, which means the Gulf, and the buyers there tend to want Grade A rather than rebuild stock.

If your customers are fleet workshops, a load weighted toward 2KD with a smaller count of 1KD is the usual pattern. If you serve the Prado trade specifically, say so — that is a different container.

The weak points that decide value

Both engines are common-rail, so injector condition is where the money sits. The 1KD carries a specific, well-documented history: injector seal failures that, left unattended, end in damaged pistons — some of these engines had hard lives, and a 1KD that looks clean outside can hide exactly the damage that matters. Its variable-nozzle turbo is also more expensive to replace than the 2KD's simpler unit.

This is why the trade grades this family harder than petrol, and the 1KD hardest of all. Turbo shaft play, injector condition and evidence of overheating are the points that decide value; leak-down and borescope inspections are how they are measured. They are not part of our check, and no measuring equipment is available at the warehouse.

Our own check is the same for every engine we supply: each engine is cleaned, handled and looked over, its crankshaft is turned by hand with a tool to confirm that the mechanism rotates, and it is photographed from every side. What the check covers: a manual crankshaft rotation check and an individual photo record. It is not a compression, leak-down, bench or running test, so on its own it does not prove how an engine will run once installed.

The rebuild trade wants them anyway

Lower-grade and core units in this family sell well to rebuilders, and the 1KD especially — but they are not what we sell. ENGICOR supplies Grade A only; lower grades are not part of our offer in any form.

Ordering the right mix

The 2KD and 1KD are not among our 17 published models, so they are a commercial enquiry: tell us which vehicles your customers actually run, whether they install or rebuild, and your destination port, and availability and price are confirmed in the quotation. If they are included in an order, they go through the same Grade A selection, manual check and photo file as every other engine.

What we will not do is sell 1KD as a casual add-on — it is the engine in this family that most rewards buying carefully.

Frequently asked

What is the difference between the 1KD and the 2KD?

Displacement and duty. The 1KD-FTV is the 3.0-litre D-4D fitted to the Prado and top-trim Hilux and Fortuner; the 2KD-FTV is the 2.5-litre fitted to the volume Hilux, Hiace and Innova. Same architecture, different output — and in the used trade, different risk: the 1KD's injector-seal history demands more careful buying.

Which is more powerful, the 1KD or the 2KD?

The 1KD. The 3.0-litre 1KD-FTV makes about 163–171 hp and 343–410 Nm, against about 102–144 hp and 200–343 Nm for the 2.5-litre 2KD-FTV, depending on market, year and turbo version. The 2KD answers with lower purchase cost and far more units in circulation.

Are 1KD and 2KD injectors and parts the same?

No, not as a rule. Both are Denso common-rail D-4D engines of the same KD family, but the injectors carry different part numbers and calibrations, and pistons, crankshaft and turbo differ with the displacement. Match parts by the part number on the old unit, not by the family name.

Which Hiace has the 1KD and which has the 2KD?

The 200-series Hiace was sold with both. The 2.5-litre 2KD-FTV is the common engine in most export markets; the 3.0-litre 1KD-FTV was fitted to higher-output versions in some markets. Read the model on the engine or the vehicle's build plate before ordering — do not assume from the body.

Are the 2KD and 1KD interchangeable in the same truck?

No. They are different displacements with different outputs and supporting parts. A workshop can convert a vehicle between them, but that is a project, not a swap — buy the model your market actually runs.

Which is better, the 1KD or the 2KD?

For a used-engine counter, the 2KD: it fits the volume Hilux, Hiace and Innova, there are far more of them to sell and to replace, and its injectors are cheaper to put right. The 1KD is the better engine on paper — 3.0 litres, more torque, the Prado and top-trim Hilux — but it is scarcer, dearer and carries the injector-seal history, so it is better only where the Prado trade is your customer.

Is the 2KD a reliable engine?

Yes, by the standards of the used trade: a simple common-rail 2.5 that fleets run for hundreds of thousands of kilometres. Its known points are injector wear and, on intercooled versions, turbo condition — both cheaper to address than on the 1KD. Treat any used 2KD as what it is, a used engine with no running test; what you see is a Grade A unit that has been cleaned, turned by hand and photographed.

Does the 2KD use less fuel than the 1KD?

In the same body, usually yes: the 2.5-litre 2KD is the economy choice and the 3.0-litre 1KD the power choice, which is why fleets and taxis run the 2KD and the Prado runs the 1KD. Actual consumption depends on the vehicle, load, turbo version and gearing more than on the engine code alone.

What is the difference between the 1KZ and the 2KD?

A generation. The 1KZ-TE is the older 3.0-litre indirect-injection turbo diesel (electronically controlled pump, no common rail) fitted to the Prado and Hilux Surf of the 1990s; the 2KD-FTV is the 2.5-litre D-4D common-rail engine from 2001 onward. The engine that actually replaced the 1KZ in the Prado is the 3.0-litre 1KD-FTV, which keeps the 1KZ's 96 × 103 mm bore and stroke. They do not interchange.

Is the 1KD a bad engine?

No, it is a valuable engine with a known failure mode. Graded honestly and priced accordingly, it is good business. The problem is 1KD units sold as tested when the injectors and pistons were never checked.

Do you supply the 2KD, 1KD or the newer GD engines?

They are not among our 17 published models. Ask as a commercial enquiry; availability of specific models is confirmed in each quotation.
