The same vans and pickups, two different fuels
The 1TR-FE is a 1,998 cc petrol four with a cast-iron block, an aluminium 16-valve twin-cam head, a timing chain and VVT-i; Dual VVT-i was added in 2015. It is the smaller brother of the 2.7-litre 2TR-FE and powers the 2.0 versions of the Hiace, the Hilux and the Innova. A factory LPG version, the 1TR-FPE, also exists.
The 2KD-FTV is a 2,494 cc common-rail turbo diesel with a 16-valve twin-cam head, fitted to the Hilux, Hiace, Innova and Fortuner. On paper the two engines have similar power. On the road they are very different, because the diesel produces up to almost twice the torque.

Are the 1TR and 2KD interchangeable?
No. One is petrol and the other diesel: the fuel system, the engine control unit, the harness, the exhaust and the gearbox pairing all differ. Converting a vehicle from one to the other is a full conversion and in many countries also a registration matter. Order the engine the vehicle was built with — the model is on the block and on the build plate, as the engine identification guide shows.
Which one your customers will ask for
It follows the fleet. Diesel Hiace and Hilux fleets — the working vehicles of East Africa — ask for the 2KD, and replacement demand for it is steady. The 1TR follows the petrol Hiace and Innova, common where petrol or LPG is the cheaper fuel or where diesel quality is poor.
The buying risk is different too. A used petrol engine like the 1TR has no turbo and no high-pressure injectors, so there is less to go wrong unseen. On a 2KD, injectors and turbo are where the money sits, and they are what a buyer should have inspected.
What our check covers
Our check is the same for every engine: cleaning, handling, a manual crankshaft rotation with a tool to confirm the mechanism turns, and photos from every side, delivered to you as an order file — Engine 1, Engine 2 and so on. It is not a compression, leak-down, bench or running test, so it does not prove how an engine will run once installed. You don't need to travel to buy, but you or your representative are welcome to visit for a Guangzhou Inspection Day and review your prepared lot in person, with a USD 1,000 visit deposit credited to your order.
How to order, and the published alternative
The 1TR-FE and the 2KD-FTV are outside our nineteen published models: tell us the vehicles, quantities and destination port and availability and price are confirmed in the quotation. If your customers run the 2.7 petrol versions of the same Hiace, Hilux, Fortuner or Prado, that engine — the 2TR-FE — is a published model at US$ 2,870 per unit, FOB, with its gearbox (two-wheel drive only) at US$ 280 in the mixed configurations; it is compared with the V6 in the 2TR vs 1GR guide.
ENGICOR sells Grade A only, inside full containers of 90 (20-ft) or 130 (40-ft) engines, or 45 + 45 and 65 + 65 with used gearboxes. Start on the quote page and name the on-request models in the notes.

Frequently asked
What is the difference between the Toyota 1TR and the 2KD?
The 1TR-FE is a 2.0-litre (1,998 cc) naturally aspirated petrol engine with about 131–137 hp and 182 Nm; the 2KD-FTV is a 2.5-litre (2,494 cc) common-rail turbo diesel with about 101–143 hp and up to 343 Nm. Both were fitted to the Hiace, Hilux and Innova.
Which is better for a Hiace, the 1TR or the 2KD?
For heavy loads and long distances the 2KD diesel, because of its much higher torque and lower fuel use. For city work where petrol or LPG is cheaper, or where diesel quality is poor, the simpler 1TR petrol is easier to keep running.
Can I swap a 2KD diesel for a 1TR petrol engine?
Not as a replacement. Fuel system, engine control unit, harness, exhaust and gearbox pairing all change, and many countries require the change to be registered. Buy the engine the vehicle was built with.
Is the 1TR the same as the 2TR?
No. They are the same family, but the 1TR-FE is the 2.0-litre (86 × 86 mm) and the 2TR-FE the 2.7-litre (95 × 95 mm). At ENGICOR the 2TR-FE is a published model at US$ 2,870; the 1TR-FE is supplied on request.
Do you supply the 1TR-FE or the 2KD-FTV?
Both are outside our nineteen published models and are supplied on request as a commercial enquiry. Availability and price are confirmed in each quotation.
