Two engines for the same trucks
The 2TR-FE is a 2,693 cc in-line four with a cast-iron block, an aluminium head, 16 valves driven by a timing chain and multi-point fuel injection; it had VVT-i on the intake side and gained Dual VVT-i in the January 2015 update. The 1GR-FE is a 3,956 cc V6 with a 60-degree aluminium block, also chain-driven and multi-point injected, which started with intake VVT-i and later moved to Dual VVT-i.
The practical difference is output and weight: the 2TR delivers roughly 150–160 hp, the 1GR from about 237 hp in its early form to about 267 hp with Dual VVT-i. Toyota offered both in the same bodies, so the engine a customer needs is decided by the vehicle's exact version, not by the model name on the tailgate.

Which vehicles take which
The 2TR-FE is the broader engine: Hilux and Fortuner four-cylinder petrol versions, the Hiace H200 van, the Land Cruiser Prado from the J120 to the current J250, plus the Innova and the Coaster bus. It is the one fleet and transport operators ask for, because it follows the vans and pickups that work every day.
The 1GR-FE follows the V6 versions: the Hilux and Fortuner V6, the Prado J120 and J150, the 4Runner (2002–2024), the FJ Cruiser (2006–2022) and the Land Cruiser 70 with a petrol V6. There is no 1GR Hiace and no 2TR FJ Cruiser, so an FJ owner has only one choice. More detail on both families is on the Toyota 2TR and 1GR page.
The gearbox detail that trips buyers
The gearbox we list for the 2TR-FE, at US$ 280, is two-wheel drive only: it does not take the transfer case a 4×4 Hilux, Fortuner or Prado needs. The 1GR-FE gearbox is listed at US$ 1,000. Gearboxes are used, untested and sold as-is, and they only ship inside the mixed configurations — 45 engines + 45 gearboxes in a 20-ft, 65 + 65 in a 40-ft. Read the transmissions page before counting gearboxes into a container.
Our check is the same for every engine: cleaning, handling, a manual crankshaft rotation with a tool to confirm the mechanism turns, and photos from every side, delivered to you as an order file — Engine 1, Engine 2 and so on. It is not a compression, leak-down, bench or running test, so it does not prove how an engine will run once installed. You don't need to travel to buy, but you or your representative are welcome to visit for a Guangzhou Inspection Day and review your prepared lot in person, with a USD 1,000 visit deposit credited to your order.
How to split a container
Because one 1GR costs about as much as 1.4 units of 2TR, most buyers build around the 2TR and add V6 units in the proportion their SUV customers justify. A 20-ft container takes 90 engines and a 40-ft 130, Grade A only, and you can mix any of the nineteen published models — many counters put a few dozen 2TR and 1GR on top of cheaper volume models so the high-value engines share the freight. Build the mix on the quote page; availability of each model is confirmed in the quotation.

Frequently asked
What is the difference between the 2TR-FE and the 1GR-FE?
The 2TR-FE is a 2.7-litre petrol in-line four (about 150–160 hp) with a cast-iron block, while the 1GR-FE is a 4.0-litre petrol V6 (237–267 hp) with an aluminium block that weighs about 166 kg bare; both use timing chains and multi-point injection and share the Hilux, Fortuner and Prado, but they are not interchangeable and the 1GR has far more power.
Which is better to import, the 2TR-FE or the 1GR-FE?
For most importers the 2TR-FE: it fits the four-cylinder Hilux, Fortuner, Hiace and Prado that fleets and transport operators run every day, and at US$ 2,870 one 1GR-FE (US$ 4,090) costs about 1.4 units of 2TR. Add 1GR-FE units only in the proportion your V6 Prado, Fortuner, 4Runner and FJ Cruiser customers justify.
Does the Hiace or the FJ Cruiser use the 2TR-FE or the 1GR-FE?
The Hiace H200 uses the 2TR-FE (or the smaller 1TR-FE), never the 1GR-FE, and the FJ Cruiser uses only the 1GR-FE V6.
How much are a used 2TR-FE and 1GR-FE at ENGICOR?
The 2TR-FE is US$ 2,870 and the 1GR-FE US$ 4,090 per unit, FOB, inside a full container of 90 (20-ft) or 130 (40-ft) engines; the matching gearboxes are US$ 280 (2WD only) and US$ 1,000 in the mixed configurations.
