Toyota 2AZ-FE vs 2AR-FE: which Camry engine should you import?

The 2AZ-FE is the 2.4-litre engine of the 2002–2011 Camry, RAV4 and Highlander; the 2AR-FE is the 2.5-litre that replaced it from 2009 onward in the same bodies. They are not interchangeable. At ENGICOR the 2AZ-FE is one of the nineteen published models at US$ 520 per unit, FOB, inside a full container; the 2AR-FE is supplied on request.

Wholesale onlyMinimum order is one full container — 90 engines in a 20-ft or 130 in a 40-ft, or with gearboxes 45 + 45 / 65 + 65. We do not sell single units. Nineteen models carry published prices; 30+ other makes on request, as a commercial enquiry.

Two generations of the same job

The 2AZ-FE is a 2,362 cc in-line four with an aluminium block, a chain-driven 16-valve head and VVT-i on the intake camshaft. It powered the Camry from the XV30 of 2002 through the XV40 that ran to 2011, together with the RAV4, the Highlander and Kluger, the Solara, the Previa and Estima vans, the Alphard and the Scion tC. Its successor, the 2AR-FE, is a 2,494 cc four with Dual VVT-i and a variable intake system; it entered the Camry in 2009 in North America, carried the XV50 Camry of 2012–2017, the 2013–2018 RAV4, the later Scion tC and several Asian-market Alphard, Vellfire and Lexus ES 250 versions.

For a buyer the difference is one of population and price band. The 2AZ sits under the largest installed base of used Camrys in West Africa and the Gulf; the 2AR follows the newer cars that are only now arriving in the used trade in volume.

Are the 2AZ and 2AR interchangeable?

No. The two engines share a design lineage but not their parts: the 2AR has a different displacement, its own engine control unit and harness, and it is paired with the six-speed automatic of the later cars, where the 2AZ ran with the four- and five-speed units. Fitting a 2AR into a 2AZ car is a conversion project, not a replacement, and almost no workshop does it. Buy the engine the car left the factory with — the year and the model code on the vehicle decide it. The engine identification guide shows where the code is stamped.

In practice this means a Camry container to Nigeria is a 2AZ container today and will gradually add 2AR units as the 2012–2017 cars age. Ask sales for the 2AR when your customers bring in the newer body.

The oil-consumption question, answered honestly

The 2AZ-FE of 2007–2011 is known for burning oil at high mileage — the piston rings are the usual cause, and Toyota ran an extended-coverage programme for it in some markets. Early engines from the 2002–2006 Camry and RAV4 can also show damaged head-bolt threads in the aluminium block, which surfaces as a coolant leak or overheating. Neither problem is universal, and both are exactly why the 2AZ is one of the most-requested replacement engines: tired originals are replaced rather than repaired.

Our check is the same for every engine: cleaning, handling, a manual crankshaft rotation with a tool to confirm the mechanism turns, and photos from every side, delivered to you as an order file — Engine 1, Engine 2 and so on. It is not a compression, leak-down, bench or running test, so it does not prove how an engine will run once installed. You don't need to travel to buy, but you or your representative are welcome to visit for a Guangzhou Inspection Day and review your prepared lot in person, with a USD 1,000 visit deposit credited to your order.

No hand check can measure oil consumption. Buyers of this family who want that information have their installer run a compression check before the engine is fitted; it is the single most useful test on an early 2AZ.

Which markets ask for which

The 2AZ is the Camry engine of Nigeria and Ghana, where the 2007–2011 Camry — the body Nigerian traders call the Camry Muscle — is the volume sedan, and of the Gulf, where the Camry 2.4 was the taxi standard in Saudi Arabia and the Emirates for a decade. A typical West Africa load puts the 2AZ next to the 2ZR-FE and the 1NZ-FE, so the higher-value Camry engines share the freight with the Corolla volume.

The 2AR follows the 2012–2017 Camry and the 2013–2018 RAV4 into the Gulf first, where those cars were sold new in numbers and where the taxi fleets renewed onto them. Demand from West Africa is growing but still behind the 2AZ. More on the family, and on why Guangzhou — where the Camry itself is built — is a deep donor pool for both, is on the Toyota 2AZ and 2AR page.

What it costs, and how to order

The 2AZ-FE is one of the nineteen published models: US$ 520 per unit, FOB, Grade A only, engines supplied as removed from the vehicle (what is fitted varies by unit and shows in each engine's photos), inside a full container of 90 (20-ft) or 130 (40-ft) engines, or in the mixed configurations of 45 + 45 and 65 + 65 with used gearboxes. The 2AR-FE is outside the published list and is quoted by hand as a commercial enquiry once you tell us the years and quantities. Build the mix on the quote page — the West Africa suggested mix already carries the 2AZ — and add the 2AR in the notes; availability of every model is confirmed in the quotation.

Frequently asked

What is the difference between the Toyota 2AZ-FE and the 2AR-FE?

The 2AZ-FE is the 2.4-litre (2,362 cc) engine of the 2002–2011 Camry, RAV4 and Highlander with VVT-i on the intake side; the 2AR-FE is the 2.5-litre (2,494 cc) successor with Dual VVT-i, fitted to the Camry from 2009 to 2017 and the RAV4 from 2013 to 2018. Both are chain-driven aluminium in-line fours with multi-point injection.

Can a 2AR-FE replace a 2AZ-FE?

No — different displacement, ECU, harness and gearbox pairing make it a conversion rather than a replacement. Buy the engine the car was built with; the year and the model code on the vehicle decide which one that is.

Does the 2AZ-FE burn oil?

The 2007–2011 2AZ-FE is known for oil consumption at high mileage, usually from the piston rings, and early 2002–2006 engines can show head-bolt thread damage in the block. Our manual crankshaft and photo check cannot measure oil consumption; buyers who want that information have their installer run a compression check before fitting.

How much does a used 2AZ-FE cost wholesale, and do you sell the 2AR-FE?

The 2AZ-FE is US$ 520 per unit at ENGICOR, FOB, Grade A only, inside a full container of 90 or 130 engines. The 2AR-FE is not among the nineteen published models and is supplied on request as a commercial enquiry.

Which cars use the 2AR-FE?

The Camry from 2009 (North America) and the 2012–2017 XV50 Camry worldwide, the 2013–2018 RAV4, the Scion tC of 2011–2016, and several Asian-market Alphard, Vellfire, Sienna and Lexus ES 250 versions.
